GM Selection Example

The target spectrum (Figure 1) utilized in this example is obtained from the sample project. Ground motion selection and spectral matching will be performed to provide basic knowledge of Spectral Matching in QuakeManager. Using the Ground Motion Selection dialog (Figure 2), the target spectrum, fitting criteria (Figure 3) and filtering options are defined.

In the selection dialog, the magnitude, distance, and pulse period ranges were defined. The scale factor and period ranges were modified from the fitting criteria dialog. Also, a mean constraint of 0.9 value was applied so that the resulting mean of the records may never fall below 90% of the target spectrum. After running the analysis, a suite of records was selected as shown in the figure below (Figure 4 & Figure 5).

Based on the "Number of Top Suites to Keep", QuakeManager generated 8 suites that satisfy the defined filters.

The first generated suite was selected and added to Record Suite 1. QuakeManager generated 8 suites of records sorted in ascending order of error. It is noticed that QuakeManager generated 11 records, two maximum records from the same event (e.g. Darfield, New Zealand and Northridge-01) and single record from the same station as specified in the Ground Motion selection dialog.

With regards to the filter constraints, the maximum and minimum record magnitudes and rupture distances falls within the specified ranges. Out of the 11 generated records, two records has Tpulse equals to 1.40 and 1.62 seconds, and three records has Tpulse equals to 3.53, 4.40 and 4.79 seconds satisfying the specified number of pulse records and their ranges defined the GM selection dialog.

Note that also all records have scale factors falling within the defined range in the fitting criteria.
