For near-fault ground motions, an important intensity measure is the Instantaneous Power, denoted as IP(T₁). This metric directly quantifies the amount of energy delivered to a structure over a very short duration. Where:
•T₁ = Fundamental period of the structure.
•The velocity record is first bandpass-filtered around the period of interest.
•Power is measured over a moving window of duration 0.5 × T₁.
•The maximum value within this window defines the intensity measure.
This measure captures the short-duration, high-energy bursts that are typical of near-fault motions with velocity pulses.
